Hello everyone!
This last weekend we got underway with the project here in Shawnee, OK. We are working with the City of Shawnee, particularly a man named James Bryce, to spruce up the inside of a community pool bath house at Woodland Park. Over the years, it has undergone several different paint jobs, all of which were one solid boring grey color. Recently the city painted some of the walls white, but it simply is just not appealing to families who come wanting their kids to have a good time. Also, the area has been victim to raids of gang violence and graffiti, particularly in the bathroom area stalls. In the video below, you will see some of this that has been tried to be taken off in the past, but quite unsuccessfully. The stalls in the bathroom have also undergone some serious erosion. We got a water-based paint with a special type of sealer in it so that simply painting over the stall will further protect it (and also make it look nice!).
This weekend we had 13 volunteers come out! Our partner Ace Hardware was kind enough to donate the materials and give us the paint at cost. We also were blessed with Sonic Drive-in providing lunch for all of us. We spent about 4-5 hours sanding, taping, and painting and had a blast! James came later on during the day and his facial expression was priceless...he was so happy to finally see the poolhouse looking decent and not so junked up, especially with a little color on the walls to splash things up.
This next weekend we are not only going to have another round of volunteers, but our muralist, Jane Hacker, will be starting her design and the OBU Art Club is going to do some special embroidery designs on the bathroom entrace walls. It is truly a special project that I am thankful to be a part of, and thankful for all the help Surgance has provided in making it all happen!
